GRUNAU LODGE

Your visit to Grunau Lodge will most likely start at Namibia hotel and accommodation reservations. Simply click on Grunau on the Namibian map and you will go straight to Grunau Lodge where you can do online reservations.

From Grunau you have a wide variety of accommodation and destinations in the surrounding areas.
Orange River Lodge offers self-catering accommodation in Noordoewer near the South African border which ic 1 hour south of Grunau Lodge. Within easy reach of Grunau Lodge is Sossusvlei. Here you can choose between luxury accommodation at Sossusvlei Lodge or self-catering accommodation such as Sossusvlei Desert Lodge. Also within in the Sossusvlei area, but 60 km further from Grunau Lodge, is Solitaire. The best option would be to use a Land Cruiser or Mitsubishi Triton from Temba Car Hire to explore this region.

From Grunau you can either drive via Sossusvlei and Solitaire to Swakopmund, or you can drive via the capital city Windhoek to Swakopmund. Whilst in Windhoek we recommend that you overnight in Arebbusch Self-Catering on the outskirts of the town. Windhoek is 700 km from Grunau Lodge. Once you reach Swakopmund, you can stay in self-catering accommodation such as Alte Brucke or the Municipal Rest Camp of Swakopmund.

Also about 900 km from Grunau Lodge is DAMARALAND with excellent accommodation such as Vingkerlip Lodge, Twyfelfontein Country Lodge, Ugab Terrace Lodge and Palmwag. The famous Etosha National Park is almost the same distance from Grunau Lodge. At Etosha National Park you can choose your Etosha accommodation at Etosha Accommodation or simply stay at the Etosha self catering Lodge near Okaukuejo in Namibia.

You can choose to visit the northern part of Namibia or the Caprivi after your stay at Grunau Lodge. Allow at least 12 hours for the drive from Grunau Lodge to the Caprivi. You can overnight at Kaisosi Lodge near Rundu. For the rest of your stay in the Caprivi you will most likely select accommodation from CAPRIVI ACCOMMODATION where you can do online reservations for the Caprivi. Ngepi Camp is a perfect family destination along the Kavango River (also known as the panhandle of the Okavango River) and 14 hours drive from Grunau Lodge. Sixteen hours drive from Grunau Lodge along the Kwando River is Kwando Camp and Mazambala Island Lodge, a luxury and affordable lodge on an island in the Kwando River in the Caprivi National Park.

You can fly from South Africa or Europe, and then drive to Grunau from Windhoek. However take note that Klm which is the Netherlands national airline, is renown for bad service and we therefore advise you to rather fly Air Namibia. Once in Namibia you can drive along the Trans Kalahari Highway to South Africa and overnight at Kang Ultra Lodge, the best accommodation along the Trans Kalahari Highway between Johannesburg and Windhoek in Kang, Botswana.

From Grunau Lodge you can drive via Windhoek to Botswana. Your first stop will be in Ghanzi which is 8 hours from Grunau. In Ghanzi, Temba offers accommodation in the traditional Kalahari Arms Hotel or on a game farm,Thakadu Lodge 5 km south, en route to Grunau.

From Ghanzi it will take you 2 hours to drive to Maun. In Maun, which is just over a 1000 km from Grunau, you can select accommodation at MAUN ACCOMMODATION where you can stay in Thamalakane River Lodge or simply continue to the Okavango Delta where we offer a wide selection of accommodation in Moremi and the Okavango Delta. In comparison to Grunau Lodge the accommodation in the Okavango Delta is very upmarket. Once in the Okavango Delta you will most likely need a tour guide to arrange a safari for you.

Coming from Grunau, Windhoek and Ghanzi you might consider visiting Shakawe on the western panhandle of the Okavango Delta. Here we strongly recommend Drotsky's Cabins a birding and fishing paradise, 1100 km from Grunau Lodge.

Travelling from Grunau you can overnight at Khama Rhino Sanctuary, affordable accommodation in an eco-tourism destination, 1300 km from Grunau. Another option would be Woodlands self catering near Francistown in Botswana, Gweta Makgadigadi lodge and hotels or Nata Lodge on the edge of the Makgadigadi Pans in Botswana. From Grunau 1500 km, and 300 km from Kasane and Chobe.

In Kasane you can select your accommodation from Chobe lodge hotel and other accommodation or you can simply make a reservation at SENYATI SAFARI LODGE or Toro Lodge which is 1900 km from Grunau in Namibia. Once in Kasane you can visit VICTORIA FALLS, the adventure capital with excellent accommodation in this area. You can choose to drive from Grunau to Windhoek and to fly from Windhoek to Victoria Falls. At VICTORIA FALLS you can select some excellent accommodation.

Gaborone is the capital of Botswana and 1300 km from Grunau. You can select accommodation at Gaborone Hotels lodges and self catering or you can simply book Cresta Lodge Gaborone if you prefer luxury in the CBD of Gaborone, Botswana. If you want a more reasonable hotel the The Big Five Lodge is 10 minutes from the CBD in Gaborone and may be what you are looking for. If you were impressed with Grunau Lodge, you might like Mokolodi Lodge Gaborone, self-catering accommodation in a game reserve just 12 km from Gaborone.

Grunau is one of Namibia's most southern towns. You will therefore most likely want to visit South Africa after your stay at Grunau Lodge. Upington in the Northern Cape is just 3 hours drive from Grunau and it offers excellent accommodation in a boutique hotel, the Kalahari Sun River Lodge or in self-catering accommodation at Upington Country Lodge or at Kalahari Monate Lodge at Spitskop Nature Reserve.

Britstown in the Northern Cape will certainly remind you of Grunau. Due to the fact that Grunau Lodge offers such a variety of accommodation, both the Britstown Transkaroo Lodge in the main road of Britstown and Kambro Lodge with its self-catering units, will remind you of Grunau Lodge in Namibia.

Colesberg in the Northern Cape in South Africa is a much bigger town than Grunau in Namibia. The Gables Inn will remind you of the Grunau Lodge self-catering units. If you prefer a hotel, the Merino Inn Motel is just oudside Colesberg on the N1. This is a beautiful three star hotel and the perfect stopover between Port Elizabeth and Grunau.

Grunau is in the Namib Desert and very different to the Drakensberg Mountain's green valleys and beautiful rivers. Why not consider a night at Amazian Mountain River Lodge at Underberg in the Drakensberg Mountains, or perhaps visit the former Transkei in the Eastern Cape.

Perhaps you can start your visit at the former capital of Umtata which is now known as Mthatha. Here you can overnight at the Umtata Savoy Hotel which is 1700 km from Grunau. From Mthatha you will visit the Wildcoast. Perhaps you will visit southern resorts such as Kob Inn Hotel or Mazeppa Bay Hotel before visiting the Hole-in-the-Wall self-catering accommodation. Port St Johns is about 2 days drive from Grunau and here you will stay in either Umngazi River Lodge or at N'taba River Lodge.
